SONGS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Children enjoy songs, rythms, and melodies. As a result, songs are an effective tool for teaching and practising language, as well as patterns and vocabulary. Melody and rythm are an essential aid to memory. By singing, children are able to forget fears and shyness and practise the language in a joyful way together. Songs are also fun and motivating activities and are a good opportunity to add movement.

HOW WE TEACH A SONG

Firstly, we teach children a certain vocabulary set using flashcards, pictures, matching activities etc.
Secondly, we play the song to the class. The children listen and point to the pictures to show understanding of the key words. Then we recite the key words with the class. We say each word and ask the children to repeat. We can play a memory game.
Thirdly, we play the song again. Children listen and follow the lines. Then they fill in missing words. We check their answers. After that we say each line and ask the children to repeat.
Last, we ask the children to suggest their own actions to accompany the song. And this is their favourite part! We ask questions. We sing the song again, this time with actions.
