Making a smowman puppet

 Teaching colours and shapes

Our world is literally made up of colours and shapes. That is what we see all around us! A house has a different shape from a plant which has a different shape from a dog or a bird. And the cars, flowers, and street signs around us come in many different colours. Teaching children about colours and shapes is a great way to give them some vocabulary for describing the world around them. This opens up new and exciting avenues for verbal communication. When teaching shapes, we usually start with the most common shapes (squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles) before introducing other shapes like diamonds, hexagons and stars. When teaching colours we start with red, yellow, orange, green, blue, black and white.

Making snowmen out in the snow is the best, but if there is no snow outside (or if it’s just too cold) – we teach our learners how to make a paper snowman puppet. We can really play with colours and shapes with this craft.

We need:

o            3 big white or blue circles for the snowman’s body

o            1 big black or green rectangle for his hat

o            2 small black squares for his eyes

o            1 orange triangle for his nose

o            1 red rectangle for his scarf

o            3 small colourful circles for his buttons

o            glue

o            1 wood stick

How do we use the puppets? We sing a song “I’m a little snowman”! It’s fun!
